미국 독립 기념일 단상

7월 4일 미국 독립기념일은 나에게도 남다른 의미가 있는 날이다. 1985년에 미국으로 이민을 오는 것이 결정되면서 어느 날 갈까 하고 생각하다가 7월 4일로 정하여 미국 입성을 온 미국이 축하하는 날로 하는 것이 잊어버리지 않겠다라고 생각하고 정하였다.

4월인가 인터뷰를 하고 비자를 받았는데  만료 기간이 90일 이어서 만료일인 7월 10일 경 이전엔 미국으로 출국하여야 했다. 강남 은마아파트에서 살고 있었는데 집을 매각하려는데 팔리질 않아서 애를 쓴 기억이 지금도 새롭다. 당시 로얄동에 로얄층은 다른 집보다 더 비쌌는데 집사람이 전망이 제일 좋고 7층을 선택하면서 83년 가을에 5500만원을 주고 샀다. 그 후 부동산 경기가 침체되면서 일년 여 뒤 집을 팔려고 같은 가격으로 내놓았는데 한 달이 지나도 매입자가 나타나지 않아 하는 수 없이 가격을 내리기 시작하였는데 5000에도 4800에도 나가지 않고 시간은 흘러 6월 하순이 되어 불과 열흘 남짓 남었는데도 작자가 나타나질 않았다.

결국 4500으로 내리자 나타난 사람이 있었는데... 그 사람은 2000만원 밖에 없어 나보고 자기가 거래하는 외환은행 한국일보 앞에 있는 지점에서 대출을 2500만원을 하여 가격을 가지라는 어처구니 없는 조건을 제시하였다. 너무 화급하여 전세도 생각해 보았지만 하는 수 없어 대출을 하여 4500을 손에 쥐고 집을 매각하였던 기억은 평생 잊지 못한다.

7월 4일 고국을 떠나 하와이 와이키키 KAL호텔에 여장을 풀고 애들과 해변을 거닐면서 미국의 첫 발걸음을 내디뎠다. 지금도 밤 9시에 축하 불꽃놀이를 하지만 그날도 가족이 모두 해변가에 앉아 환상적으로 펼쳐지는 불꽃놀이를 보며 즐겼던 기억이 떠오른다.

벌써 26년을 미국에서 살면서 많은 경험과 축복을 받은 것을 감사한다. 어려운 고비마다 인도하시는 하나님의 보호와 사랑으로 가족 모두 건강하고 믿음생활을 잘 하며 서로 사랑하며 자기 몫을 할 수 있는 것은 생각할 수록 넘치는 은혜를 받은 가족이다. 이제 육십을 넘어 생의 후반기를 지나며 살아가는 동안 맡겨주신 탤런트를 주위에 사랑과 말씀으로 섬기고 주께 영광을 돌리며 성실하게 살아가는 것이 목표이다. 지금 계획하고 있는 법정통역사가 되는 길도 머지 않아 열여주시면 어려운 한인을 위해 통역을 하며 봉사하고 싶다. 오늘도 동시통역을 공부하며 법정 용어와 온갖 단어를 외우고 애쓰는 것도 허락하신 일이라 생각하고 열심히 준비하고 있음에 감사 밖에는 표현할 것이 없다.

올해도 각 도시에서 펼쳐진 Firework의 환상적인 쑈가 펼쳐졌고 축하 기념식의 모습도 담았다.
