예멘의 끝없는 혼돈: Yemen's Unending Chaos

For nearly a year now, Yemen has been torn by a ferocious war pitting rebels, known as Houthis, and forces fighting for former President Ali Abdullah Saleh against fighters loyal to exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. Some tribal militias have aligned with the Hadi government, others have sided with the Houthis, some strive for their own independence, and Al Qaeda and ISIS are both attempting to seize territory. Months of bombing by a Saudi-led coalition of Arab nations including Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, and Bahrain, with the support of the United States, have resulted in thousands of deaths and countless houses and buildings reduced to rubble. Yemen’s already-fragile infrastructure is under intense pressure, as the lack of security and supplies affect every individual and institution. The United Nations continues to attempt to bring about a meaningful cease-fire, to little effect. Gathered here are images from a deeply-fractured Yemen, taken over the past few months.

  • A Yemeni soldier, pictured through a vehicle's windscreen, which was damaged by a bullet, gestures out of the window, in Marib, Yemen, on October 15, 2015. Marib is a city that is heavily armed even by the standards of Yemen, where the ready availability of weapons helped start civil war and is now preventing anyone coming out on top. Yemenis often say there are three guns for every person, a boast that has become an urgent concern in a country where the United Nations says the humanitarian situation is "critical".
