Sunday was the deadliest day yet in the recent battles in the Gaza Strip, capping a bloody weekend where more than a hundred Palestinians were killed, as well as 18 Israeli soldiers, following an Israeli advance into Gaza. Israel said on Sunday it had expanded its ground offensive, and Hamas militants kept up rocket fire into the Jewish state with no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough to end the worst fighting between Israel and Hamas in two years.
