장수는 축복인가 저주인가

長壽는祝福인가 咀呪인가?     언제부터인가....중장노년 공통된 구호(口號)로 99세까지 팔팔하게 살다가 2, 3일 아프다가 죽는다는 ‘9988234’가 유행(流行)이다.   이제 우리 사회도 고령화 시대를 맞이하면서, 나이가 들어도 젊고 건강하게 보낼 수 있는 방법이 주요 관심사로,떠오르면서,이 구호는 재미를 넘어 사람들의 마지막 소원이 되고 있다.   하지만 이 외침은 그야말로 소망(所望)일뿐이다. 절대로 지금 상황에서는 불가능한 일이다.   한국인은 죽기 전 2~3일 아픈 것이 아니라, 평균 11년 동안 병을 앓다 사망한다는 보고(報告)가 있다.     만약 이 수치대로라면,60살에 은퇴한다 해도 99살까지,산다면 근 30년을 일없이 살다가 죽는데, 그것도 여든부터는 병을 앓다, 죽어야 한다면 오래 사는 것이 복일까 ?   가난은 죽음보다 무섭다고 죽기 전 병치레도 문제지만 사실 그것보다 더 두려운 것은 노후(老後)자금이다.     흔히 여유 있는 노후생활을 위해서는 3층집이 필요하다고 한다. 1층은 쌀과 같은 기본적인 국민연금, 2층은 반찬과 같은 퇴직연금, 그리고 취미에 쓰여 질 3층 집은 개인적으로 마련하는 개인(個人)연금이다.   하지만 이렇게 체계적으로 준비된,사람은 노인층에서 20%도 안 된다고 하니, 오래 산다는 것은 복이 아니라 또 다른 형벌(刑罰)일지도 모르겠다.     오늘도 밥 한 끼를 해결하기 위해, 무료급식소까지 1시간을 넘게 걸어오는 사람들, 길거리마다 박스를 주어 파지 1kg에,70원을 받겠다고 바리바리 싸들고 다니는 노인들은,경제적 전선에서 물러나면서 사회적 냉대로 고통과 상실의 한파는, 어떤 추위보다 더 춥게만 느껴지고 있는 우리 사회의 잊어진 그림자들이다.   자녀들에게 부담주지 않고 아름다운 노년(老年)을 마감하기 위해서는 반드시 노후자금이 필요하다.     하지만 진짜 노후 준비는 돈만 갖고 되는 문제가 아니다. 적어도 아름다운 노후란 삶의 양만큼 삶의 질은 더욱 걱정해야할 과제(課題)다.   단순히 오래 사는 것 보다는,죽는 그 순간까지 활기(活氣)찬 삶을 유지하기 위해서는 돈 과함께 미리 준비해야 할 일들이 많다.   이 일을 정작 나이 들어 시작한다면, 준비할 수도 없고 또 준비한들 아무 의미도 없을 것이다.   진정한 노후 준비란, 아니 팔팔하게 살다가 죽으려면 반드시 젊을 때부터 철저하게 준비해야만, 아름다운 인생을 디자인 할 수 있다.     첫째는 육체(肉體)건강 관리다.   'Younger Next Year’라는 책에서 헨리박사는 생물학적으론 나이가 들면 성장이나 퇴화는 있을지 몰라도 은퇴나 노화(老化)란 없다고 단언했다.   황당한 그의 이론은 간단하다. 우리의 뇌(腦)를 속이라는 것이다.   그는 구체적으로 6가지 방법을 제시했는데, 첫 번째에서 세 번째 까지 요지(要旨)는 젊게 살려면 일주일에 4일 정도를 땀이 나도록 운동을 해야 한다는 것이다.   땀이 나도록 운동(運動)을 하면, 땀과 함께 수백 개의 화학신호가 몸 구석구석에 보내지면서,고장 난 곳을 스스로 찾아내어 치료하고, 퇴화를 가로 막고,성장을 촉진시킨다는 것이다.   사람 몸은 기계(機械)와 같이,나이가 들면 낡아지는데, 그 중에서도,혈관과 관절이 가장 문제가 된다.     그 문제를 약으로 해결하려한다면, 내성(耐性)만 기를 뿐, 결코 근본적인 대책이 될 수가 없다.   한국인이 만약 평균수명까지, 생존한다면 암(癌)에, 걸릴 확률은 26% 정도라고 한다.   운동은 이러한 암 뿐만 아니라, 모든 병(病)을 막아주는 파수꾼 역할을 톡톡히 하고 있다. 운동은 비만을 사전에 예방하고, 신체의 각종 호르몬 수치에 변화를 주고, 음식물이 장에 머무는 시간을 줄어들게 하고, 근력 증가, 체력 향상은 물론이고,면역강화, 정신건강은 보너스로 주어지게 된다   그러므로 운동은 장수(長壽)를 떠나서, 건강한 인생을 살려면,선택이 아니라 필수적인 과제임을 알고 하루라도 빨리 시작하는 것이 좋을 것이다.   둘째는 정신(精神)건강 관리다..     사람들은 노후생활을 준비 할 때, 재정이나 건강은 나름대로 계획을 세우지만, 정신건강은 늘 밀려나기가 쉽다. 아니 아예 생각조차 못하는 경우가 일쑤다. 하지만 건강하고, 의미 있는 인생을 위해선, 이 모든 것보다도 정신(精神)건강을 설계해야 것은 한국인들의 사망원인을 분석해 보면 바로 알 수 있다.     암과 뇌혈관질환 그리고 심장질환이 1위에서 3위를 차지하지만, 4위는 어이없게도 자살(自殺)이라고 한다. 20대와 30대에서는 자살이 이미 사망원인의 1위를 차지하고 있는 실정이다.   우리나라 65세 이상 인구 중 약 9% 정도가 치매노인이라고 한다. 미국에서도 치매 확률(確率)은, 65세엔 1%지만 75세면 10%, 그리고, 85세 이상이면 50% 정도라니, 암보다 두려운 것이 치매가 아니겠는가.   치매는 개인과 가정 파괴범 같이, 장수와 건강한 삶의 최대복병이 되고 있으니,어찌 정신건강에 신경 쓰지 않겠는가.     삶의 질(質)은 나이를 불문하고, 맑은 정신에서 출발하기에 ‘9988234’를 99세까지 88하게  2, 3십대 마인드로 4(살자)로 재해석해야 한다고 주장(主張)하는 것이다.   정신건강이란 한 마디로 적극적(積極的)인 삶의 자세를 계속 늦추지 않는 것이다.     더 깨끗해야하고 (Clean Up), 더 옷에 신경 써야 하고 (Dress Up), 더 상대방 말을 들어주어야 하고    (Shut Up), 더 많은 사람을 만나고 (Show Up), 더 잘 어울려 주고 (Cheer Up), 더 지갑을 열고 (Pay Up) 더 포기해야만 한다. (Give Up)   이것은 나이 들어도,존경받는 7가지 방법으로, 오래 전부터 회자(膾炙)된 내용이다.     한 마디로,이 내용은 나이가 들수록 나이든 티를 내지 말고 젊었을 때처럼, 똑같이 생활(生活)하라는 것이다. 이것이 어찌 노인들에게만,주어지는 메시지라고 할 수 있겠는가. 누구라도 이런 식(式)으로 살다면, 존경받고 삶은 더욱 풍요롭지 않겠는가.   이 7가지 방법을 가능하게 하는 것은 간단하다. 그것은 적극적인 삶의 태도에 달린 것이다.   생활 속에서 바른 의식(意識)을 갖고, 적극적인 자세로 살아간다면, 정신도 건강하고 생활에 활력을 얻어,치매든 어떤 우울증(憂鬱症)이든, 이길 수 있게 될 것이다.     암 발병 원인 80%가 잘못된 생활습관에서 온다고 하지 않던가. 그만큼 생활속에서 습관은 건강한인생에서.중요(重要)한 관건이되고있다.   세 번째 이웃과의 관계(關係)이다.   신은 인간의 행복을 처음부터 혼자서는, 누릴 수 없도록 만들었다. 일방통행같이 자기 뜻만 내세우는 사람은 아무리 돈이 많고, 건강하다 해도 삶은 언제나 무미건조하다. 천국(天國)은 이웃이 있는 사람의 것이다. 행복은 이웃이 있는 사람만이 누릴 수 있는 특권이다.   나로 인해 한(恨)을 품는 이웃이나 가족이 있다면 죽고 싶어도, 아마 죽기도 어려울 것이다.     적당할 때 2,3일 앓다가,쉽게 죽으려면 평소 젊을 때부터, 이웃에게 좋은 씨를 많이 뿌려야 한다.   앞에서 말한 헨리박사의 ‘노화는 없다’ 나머지 방법도 전부 이웃과 관계(關係)에 대한 것이다. 곧 남과 나를 아끼는 생활(生活)이란,친구들과 자주 만나 담소하며, 따뜻한 정을 나누고,봉사하는 삶을 살라고 권하고 있다.   나이가 들수록 이웃과 친구도 없이, 혼자 독불장군처럼 살면, 재미가 문제가 아니라 스스로,자기 명을 재촉하는 결과가 될 것이다.     사람은 나이가 들수록,아랫사람들에게 책망(責望)하기 쉽지만, 행복한 노년을 위해선 그 반대로 살아야 한다.   곧 자기주위에 있는 사람들을 늘 인정(認定)해주고 칭찬해 주므로, 이웃으로부터 꼭 필요한 사람으로, 살아야만 노년이 아름답다.     어떤 이는 행복한 노후의 3대 조건으로 건강과 돈 그리고 봉사(奉仕)할 거리로 꼽았다. 봉사적인 삶이란 나이 티 내지 않고 초심을 갖고 다른 사람을 섬기는 자세(姿勢)를 말한다.   그렇게 섬길 때, 육체적인 기쁨은 물론이고 정신적으로도 안정감을 찾으며, 미래에 대해 자신감(自信感)을 갖게 되는 것은 섬김을 통해 이웃의 아픔을 함께 나누므로 그들과 하나 됨을 느끼며 자신을 돌아볼 여유를 갖기 때문이다.   더 근본적인 이유는 이웃을 통해 세속적인, 욕심(慾心)을 내려놓고, 마음을 비움으로서 다시 충전 받을 수 있다는 특별한 은총에 있다.     돈만으론 인생이 행복(幸福)할 수 없다는 것을 하루라도 빨리 깨달아야 바른 노년을 준비할 수 있다.   건강과 함께 무언가 몰입할 수 있는, 일거리와 이웃이 있어야만, 목표가 생기고 하루하루가 새로워지는 법이다.   그 목표란 다른 것이 아니다. 이웃에게 베풀고, 召天을 準備하는 삶이다.
