Chile attracts more than 2 million tourists every year, but judging by these spectacular locations you’re about to see, it deserves far more. This long, narrow strip of land, bordering the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, is home to regions of breathtaking natural beauty. Here you will see serene lakes, mysterious valleys, Incaic architecture, Ski resorts and wonderful national parks. Are you ready for this trip of a lifetime?


1. Marble Caves, General Carrera Lake

Over six thousand years of crashing waves passed in order for these calcium carbonate caves to appear. They are as beautiful as marble.

2. Los Pingüinos Natural Monument, Magdalena Island

Chile is home to many penguins. Here is the largest colony in the south, where you can witness some 120,000 Magellanic penguins going about their business.





3. San Rafael Glacier, southern Chile
This gob smacking glacier is at least 3,000 years old, and probably even older. It stands at an astonishing 70 meters by four kilometers.





4. Easter Island, South Pacific
The nearby Easter Island is famous for these compelling moai statues known as ‘the Heads’. The average one weights 14 tons and stands at around 13 feet. But what are they for?





5. Llanquihue Lake, Chile’s Lake District
Llanquihue is only the second largest lake in the south of Chile, but it’s beauty ranks second to none, as you can see in this stunning photograph.





6. Salar de Atacama, south of San Pedro de Atacama
The largest salt flat in the country is also home to these lovely flamingos that reside in some of the small lakes that make up the area.







7. Petrohué Waterfalls, Puerto Varas

In these amazing falls there are some wonderful little birds, known as torrent ducks. Perhaps they are the only creatures that navigate such waters.



8. Pukará de Quitor, north of San Pedro de Atacama
This fort, built by a nation called the atacameno people, was made a national monument as recently as 1982, but it's actually more than seven centuries old.





9. Torres del Paine, Torres del Paine National Park

This is the perfect place for a long hike. One popular walk that allows you to take in the amazing landscapes is 14 miles long. That’s a well spent eight hours of anyone’s time.

The Lauca National Park has many volcanoes and lava rivers within its 340-acre area. You may even spot some wild llamas grazing here too.

14. laguna Cejar, Salar de Atacama

Rather like the better known Dead Sea, this lake is filled with enough salt to help you float like a duck.



15. Bahía Inglesa, the coast of Atacama Desert

It doesn’t get more simple and more satisfying than a white beach and beautiful clear blue sea.
