Bangkok, Thailand Still Flooded after Peak High Tides
(AP) — Tempers flared along a flood barrier protecting Thailand’s capital from a record deluge surging into the city, with angry residents scuffling with security forces Monday in an attempt to force open a floodgate that left their homes swamped.
The confrontation came as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said she hoped that the floodwaters could be drained through Bangkok more quickly now that peak high tides that sent the city’s main river to record heights have passed. Although much of the city is still dry, the situation remains grim in northern and western neighborhoods where water levels fed by the country’s worst flooding in more than a half century are continuing to rise.
The tensions at the Klong Sam Wa floodgate in the city’s northeast illustrate the rising anger in some neighborhoods that have been sacrificed to keep Bangkok’s central business district and historic heart dry.

지난 7월 말부터 3개월간 계속된 큰비로 지난달 28일(이하 현지 시각) 태국 최대 강인 차오프라야강은 범람 직전의 위기에 놓였습니다. 수도 방콕을 포함한 주변 일대가 일제히 물에 잠기는 바람에 피해도 막대했어요. 지금은 물이 서서히 빠지고 있지만 여전히 상당수의 집과 공장은 물에 잠겨 있다고 합니다.
이번 사태로 태국이 입은 경제적 피해는 엄청났습니다. 특히 농경지와 산업단지의 피해가 컸습니다. 태국 전역에서 1만여 개 기업이 문을 닫았고 농경지 전체 면적의 12.5%가 훼손됐죠. 해외 관광객의 발길도 뚝 끊겼습니다.
이와 관련, 태국중앙은행(BOT)은 지난주 자국의 올해 경제성장률 전망치를 4.1%에서 2.6%로 대폭 낮춰 발표했습니다. 이는 동남아시아 국가의 평균 경제성장률 전망치(5.4%)에 크게 못 미치는 수치인데요. 실제로 태국 증시는 최근 3개월간 15%나 내려앉았고, 태국 화폐 바트의 가치는 달러 대비 3.6% 떨어졌습니다. 소비자 물가도 크게 올라 서민의 고통이 커지고 있어요. 지난 1일 태국 상무부가 발표한 자료에 따르면 태국의 10월 소비자물가지수는 지난해 같은 기간보다 4.2% 상승했다고 합니다.
