A Look Back at Wimbledon
The Championships, Wimbledon started in 1877 and is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in history. The games played and the players who win on Centre Court have become legends. The tournament is played at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on grass courts, the games original surface. The Championships start each June, with the Finals taking place on Centre Court in early July. The winners of the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Final take their place in tennis history as a winner of one of the four tennis Grand Slam tournaments, the others being the US Open, French Open and Australian Open. 2011 total Prize Money is $23.5 million, with $1.77 million each to the men’s and women’s singles champions.

지금부터 30여년 전 산업은행에 근무하던 중 1979년 4월에 금융 연수를 받으러 영국 런던에 있는 Merrill Lynch에 갔었다. 생전 처음 외국 여행을 영국에서 보내며 샌드위치를 먹으며 지낸 일이 엊그제 같다.
6월 하순 경부터 윔블던 대회가 열리면서 영국은 세계적인 테니스 스타들의 명경기에 연일 사로 잡혀 있었다. 메릴 린치에서 정신없이 바쁘게 일을 하는 부서인 Trading room에도 TV로 테니스 경기를 보게 할 정도로 중요한 경기는 모두의 초미의 관심사였다.은행에서 매일 아침 새벽에 한 시간 이상씩 테니스를 치던 나도 일생일대의 기회를 놓힐 수가 없어서 주말에 함께 영국에 연수 중이던 동료 선배(한송호)와 함께 갔다.
꿈에도 그리던 런던 남쪽의 윔블던 경기장은 인산인해로 사람의 구름으로 메워져 있었다. 암표상들이 고가로 사겠다는 유혹도 뿌리치고 입장하여 제일 먼저 본 경기는 지금도 생생하게 기억하고 있다. 센터 코트에서 인도의 암리트라지라는 처음 본 선수가 당시 세계 1인자인 스웨덴의 비욘 보그(Bjorn Borg)를 세트 스코아로 2:1로 이기고 마지막으로 보인 4세트도 5:4로 리드하면서 자기 서비스 게임을 시작하는 순간은 장내가 술렁이기 시작하였다. 무적을 자랑하며 윔블던을 연패를 하고 있는 보그가 무명의 동양인에게 무너지기 직전이었다.
그때까지 암리트라지는 자기 서비스 게임을 단 한 번만 지고 있었기에 거의 이기리라고 보여졌다. 그러나 보그는 모든 최고의 선수들이 그렇듯이 절대절명의 위기의 순간을 맞아 자기의 최고의 실력을 발휘하여 기적적으로 게임을 따내며 5:5의 타이를 만들었다. 관중들은 눈 앞에서 벌어지는 극적인 드라마에 숨을 죽이며 손에 땀을 쥐며 기가막힌 경기를 관전하는 역사적인 순간이라 흥분하고 있었다.
보그가 그 후 그 세트를 이기고 마지막 5세트를 너무도 쉽게 마무리를 하는 경기를 보며 가슴 졸이던 순간들이 되살아 난다. 보그는 그 해도 우승하고 다음 해인 1980년도 우승하며 윔블던 5연패의 위업을 달성한 최고의 선수였다.
