버려진 컨테이너가 가난한 서민과 대학생들에게 훌륭한 집과 기숙사를 제공한다. 심지어 명품 건물로 대접받으며 세계적인 건축·디자인상을 휩쓸기도 한다. 네모난 상자들을 쌓거나 잘라내고 조합하면 재미있는 모양도 만들 수 있다. 환경도 살리고 건축비를 절감할 수 있다. 폐기처분될 뻔한 쓰레기가 새로운 형태와 기능의 건물로 탄생하는 것이다.

# 수천 명이 사는 ‘컨테이너 도시’

땅이 좁은 네덜란드에서는 컨테이너 건물이 빛을 발한다. 세계적인 항만 도시여서 재료 구하기도 쉽다. 암스테르담엔 수백 명이 사는 기숙사와 아파트까지 있다. 그야말로 ‘컨테이너 도시’다. 물 위에 떠 있는 거대한 ‘컨테이너 아파트’인 실로담(Silodam)에는 157세대가 산다. 10층인 이 아파트는 4~8세대 별로 독립된 복도와 엘리베이터, 갤러리까지 갖춰져 있다. 4~8세대가 묶인 독립건물 형태는 15가지나 된다. 모두 다른 구조다. 컨테이너로 만들었기 때문에 이런 맞춤형 아파트가 가능했다.

기숙사 키토넨(keetwonen)은 1000명이 사는 세계에서 가장 큰 컨테이너 건물이다. 각 방에는 개별 발코니, 욕실, 주방, 분리된 침실이 있고 방음도 잘 돼 있어 혼자 살기에 부족함이 없다. 인기가 높아 2016년까지 임대 계약이 끝났을 정도. 두 건물 모두 네덜란드를 방문한 건축 관련자라면 한번씩 방문하는 명소다.

# 명품 건물된 ‘철깡통’

‘가로 12ｍ, 세로 3ｍ, 높이 2.6ｍ’ 투박하게 생긴 네모난 박스로 만든 건물이 세계적인 건축·디자인 상을 받았다. 지난달 7일 미국 뉴욕건축가협회(AIAINY)가 주관하는 2011년 디자인 어워드 건축부문에 선정된 ‘오픈스쿨’이다. 뉴욕건축가협회는 1857년 설립돼 현재 4400여 명의 회원이 활동하고 있는 미국 최고의 권위 있는 건축 단체다. 이 건물은 안양시에서 지난해 10월 ‘제3회 안양공공예술프로젝트’를 위한 전시 공간 겸 전망대로 만든 건물이다. 컨테이너 8개를 45도 각도로 잘라서 화살표 모양으로 붙이니 넓은 공간이 탄생했다. 1층을 공중으로 띄워 산책로와 휴식공간을 만들었고, 2층 실내는 강연과 전시가 가능하다. 이 건물의 백미는 3층 전망대. 이곳에 오르면 학의천을 한눈에 바라볼 수 있어 시민이 자주 찾는다.

# 고급 빌라 뺨치는 ‘재활용 주택’

세계 최대 소비 대국인 미국은 수많은 물건을 수입한다. 자연스럽게 컨테이너가 남아돈다. 미국 정부로선 골칫덩이가 됐다. 처분하기가 어려워 곳곳에 쓰레기로 방치돼 심각한 환경문제까지 야기하고 있다. 캘리포니아의 피터 다이머리아(Peter Demaria)나 뉴욕의 로텍(LotEk)같은 건축가들은 버려진 쓰레기(컨테이너)를 활용해 서민들을 위한 집을 짓는다. 피터가 2006년도 지은 ‘Redondo Beach Shipping Container House’는 8개의 낡은 컨테이너로 만들었다. 싸구려 재료로 만들었다고 생각할 수 없을 만큼 고급 빌라 뺨친다. 내부에는 수영장도 있다. 3.3㎡당 건축비는 470만원정도로 비슷한 수준의 집을 지을 때와 비교해 절반 이하의 비용이 들었다.
# 오갈 데 없는 가난한 노동자를 위한 기숙사

중국 하이난은 ‘동양의 하와이’로 불릴 만큼 아름다운 곳이다. 일 년 내내 관광객들로 붐빈다. 중국인들이 가장 여행가고 싶어하는 곳이다. 그러나 살인적인 부동산 가격 때문에 집 없는 현지인들이 많다. 지난해 10월 하이난의 한 공장에서 저렴한 기숙사를 만들어 화제다. 컨테이너로 가난한 근로자 수십 명을 위한 쾌적하고 안전한 아파트형 기숙사를 만들었다. 4개의 길쭉한 컨테이너를 ㄷ자로 모아 '공동정원'까지 만들었다. 40명이 살기에 충분한 공간으로 재탄생했다. 안후이성 양식의 전면과 공동정원이 인상적이다. 2011.5.19. 미주중앙일보 기사

The most incredible fun fact about this structure is that it was completed in 2.5 months from start to finish, including design and construction.

Gregory Colbert originally conceived of the idea for a sustainable traveling museum in 1999. He envisioned a structure that could easily be assembled in ports of call around the world, providing a transitory environment for his work on its global journey.
