어제 일본의 강진 8.9의 여파는 인간이 상상할 수 없는 위력이었는지 그로 인한 폐해는 시시각각 들어 오는 뉴스를 보면서 놀라지 않을 수 없다. 당시 진앙지로부터 많이 떨어진 일본의 여러 도시에서도 지진의 순간을 담은 동영상을 보면서 그리고 그들의 증언을 들어보니 참으로 강력하여 모든 사람을 공포로 몰아 넣었음을 알게 되었다. 나도 1980년부터 3년간 동경에서 살면서 난생 처음 지진을 경험하였지만 기억으로는 5.9가 가장 컸었는데 새벽에 일어난 그 지진은 지금도 기억이 생생하다. 일본 가정에는 집에 지진을 빨리 알릴 수 있는 장치가 있는데 바로 샨데리아였다. 그날 새벽에 집사람과 나는 그 유리 샨데리아가 서로 부딪치며 내는 요란한 소리에 놀라 잠에서 깨어보니 방안이 심하게 요동치고 있었다. 아이들 둘이 자는 방을 보니 머리 맡 근처의 장이 흔들리며 애들 위로 덮칠 것 같아 손으로 넘어지지 않게 붙잡으며 공포의 순간을 지났던 기억이 생각난다.

지금까지의 뉴스는 사망자가 천 명을 넘었고 어떤 마을은 1800가구가 모두 파괴되었다고 한다. 여진이 계속되어 일본은 매우 힘든 시기를 겪고 있다. 세계의 지원과 사랑이 필요한 때다. 히로시마 원폭의 5만배에 달하는 위력이라고 하는데 나가노에는 6.6진도의 지진이 발생했다고 한다. 하와이에서도 지진을 느꼈다고 하고 이곳 미 서부 지역에는 츠나미가 이미 왔는데 1명이 벌써 파도에 실종되었다고 한다.

11일 오후 2시 46분쯤 일본 도호쿠(東北)지역 인근 해저에서 규모 8.8의 강진이 일어나 건물과 고속도로가 무너지고 사상자가 속출하는 큰 피해가 발생했다. 또 지진 영향으로 높이 10m 쓰나미가 태평양 연안 내륙을 덮쳐 선박과 차량 및 건물이 바닷물에 휩쓸려 나가는 등 엄청난 후속 피해가 예상된다. 여진도 계속 이어지고 있다.

일본 교도통신·NHK방송 등에 따르면 센다이 해변에서 300여명의 시신이 발견되고 여객열차가 파도에 휩쓸려 사라지는 등 인명피해는 계속 늘어날 전망이다. 일본 교도통신은 "일본 전역에 사망자가 1000명을 넘을 전망"이라고 보도했다. 도쿄 및 일본 동북부 지역에서 신칸센(新幹線) 등 열차운행은 전면 중단됐고, 하네다·나리타·센다이 공항도 폐쇄됐다. 이중 하네다와 나리타 공항 일부는 이날밤 늦게 정상화 됐다.
지진 진원은 도쿄(東京) 북동쪽 373㎞, 센다이(仙臺) 동쪽 130㎞ 해상의 지하 24.4㎞ 지점으로 일본 기상청은 규모를 7.9로 발표했다가 8.4로 수정한 뒤 다시 8.8로 올렸다. 이번 지진은 일본 역사상 최대규모로 1923년 14만명 사망자를 낸 관동대지진(규모 7.8)보다 크며 1945년 히로시마 원자폭탄의 5만배에 해당한다.

이번 지진 영향으로 이날 오후 타이완과 하와이에도 쓰나미가 덮쳤고, 칠레와 페루 등에도 쓰나미 경보 및 주의보가 내려졌다. 한편 이와테현에 거주하는 한국 교민 30여명이 11일 저녁 현재 연락이 두절된 상태라고 외교통상부 관계자가 밝혔다.

일본 지진이 발생한 곳은 북아메리카판 내부다. 태평양판이 아래로 밀고 내려가면서 발생한 충격에너지가 북미판 내부 균열 부위인 단층(斷層)을 엇갈리게 한 것. 태평양 깊이를 평균 400m로 보고 계산했을 때 쓰나미가 전파되는 속도는 시속 700㎞ 정도 될 것으로 예측된다. 이 쓰나미가 태평양을 따라 동진(東進)하는 가운데, 국제적십자연맹(IFRC)은 11일 "쓰나미의 파고가 4~10m에 이를 경우 파푸아뉴기니나 투발루 등 태평양의 몇몇 섬들이 위험할 수 있다"고 경고했다

MSN NBC 뉴스가 다루고 있는 것 중 센다이시[仙台]는 진원지로부터 약 80여 마일 떨어져 있어 가장 큰 피해를 보았는데 주위의 원자력발전소에서 문제가 발생하였다. 토요일에 일본의 관계기관이 발표한 바에 의하면 후쿠시마 제 1 원자력발전소의 냉각 시스템이 작동을 하지 못하여 평소의 약 1000배에 달하는 방사능이 제 1 원자로의 통제소에서 검출되었다고 한다. 그리하여 반경 2마일 이내로 소개를 제한한 것을 반경 6마일로 늘려 약 3000명이 강제로 지역에서 퇴출되었다. 지진으로 인한 전기가 단전되어 원자로의 냉각기능을 마비시켜 방사물질이 상승하고 있다고 한다. 소개 명령이 내린 몇 시간 후에는 발전소에서 소량의 방사능 증기를 방출하여 높아진 압력을 내리므로 최악의 상황을 면하는 조치를 할 것으로 정부는 발표하였다.
