2010년의 마지막 날에 즈음하여 회고하며 일 년을 정리하던 중 문득 떠오르는 것은 2001년 9월 11일에 있었던 테러의 참혹한 광경이었다. 여느 때와 같이 회사에서 일 할 준비를 하며 있던 중 CNN의 Market News가 갑짜기 정규방송을 중단하고 이상한 장면을 보내면서 뭔가 다급한 중계를 하여 TV를 쳐다보게 되었다. 어느 건물에서 연기가 피어나고 있는 것이라 대수롭지 않게 여기며 어디서 화재가 났나 보다 하고 생각하고 있던 차에 상황이 심각한 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 비행기가 Twin Tower 중 하나를 들이 받았다는 것이었다.

새벽 6시 근처였다. 나도 일을 중단하고 TV 앞에 다른 직원들과 모여 들어 자세히 보게 되었다. 회사가 50층에 달하는 건물 36층에 있었는데 테러에 의한 것이라는 사실을 알고 우리 모두는 근처 맥도날드로 옮겼다. 거기서도 TV로 현장을 계속 보여주고 있었다. 사람들 모두 놀라고 한편 믿을 수 없다는 듯이 계속되는 상황을 보고 있었다. 그런데 남은 한 건물에도 비행기가 돌진하여 대 참사와 함께 시뻘건 화염이 피어오르고 건물은 불에 휩싸이는 것을 목격하였다. 경악을 넘어서 할 말을 잃었다. 아니 어찌 이런 일이......그러던 중에 아무도 예상하지 못한 일이 벌어졌다. 미국의 상징, 자유의 심볼, 경제의 힘같이 여겨졌던 그 거대한 건물이 무너져 내리고 있었다. 그 속의 갇혀 있어 구조의 손길을 기다리고 있던 선량들, 그들을 구하기 위해 건물에 진입해 올라가고 있던 구조대원 소방관들.....
세상에 살면서 가장 참혹하고 끔찍한 장면을 목격하였다. 눈물이 하염없이 흘러 내렸다. 분노의 마음이 끓어 오르기 시작했다. 인간이 얼마나 악한가를 보여주고 있었다. 살인을 해야만 직성이 풀리고 상대를 무자비한 방법을 가리지 않고 생명을 앗아가는 그들은 어떤 인간들인가?

그 충격은 아니 표현할 언어가 없다, 내 이성이 억제하기에는 도를 넘었다. 두 건물이 모두 잿더미로 변하고 나서 나는 정신을 차려야겠다고 생각했다. 맥도날드에서 나와 사무실에 들어오니 이미 LA 도 전쟁이 난 것같은 분위기로 우리 모두를 그리고 주위의 모든 사람과 길을 걷고 있는 사람들을 얼빠지게 하였다. 건물 관리 방송과 함께 LA의 라디오 방송에서 고층건물에 있는 사람들은 빨리 빠져 나오라는 뉴스를 전하고 있었다. 서둘러 건물을 빠져 나오면서 세상에 세상에 이런 일이 있을 수 있을까? 라는 생각이 머리를 아프게 하고 응징하고픈 마음이 의분이 나도 모르게 끓어 올랐다. 기도가 나오고 인간에 대한 저주가 그리고 가슴 아프게 떠오르는 갇혔던 사람들의 절규와 손흔듬이 깊이 깊이 속을 파들어 갔다. 아 슬프고 애통하고 불쌍한 사람들....
당신을 기억하고 잊지말아야지 하는 각오가 나를 붙들고 있었다.

해마다 911을 맞으며 기억하고 추도하고 되새기면서 그 참담한 광경도 서서히 멀어져 가고 있다. 3천명에 달하는 인명을 앗아간 엄청난 비극! 이제 그 잿더미를 딛고 새로운 소망과 희망을 안고 원혼을 달래며 그 희생이 값 있는 밑걸음이 되게 하는 재기의 삽과 불굴의 의지가 일어 나고 있다.

당시에 친구들에게 보낸 편지

Another Day For US
Hello guys! How are you doing today?
Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for Dongsoo's
amazing works to have our own website at last. I have enjoyed visiting here to see
the already grandpa-like faced old men. I noticed many guys have successfully
(?) transformed to the totally different figure from their boyish good looking. Anyway
we'd better use it for our mutual interest and better future.

As you may feel the same, I lost my words seeing the unbelievable tragedy happen
a couple of weeks ago in New York. I was yielded to the deepest sorrow for the
innocent death by the merciless inhumanity of the terrorist following with the boiling
wrath on them. I couldn't help crying whenever I watched the horrendous moment of collapsing WTC: stampeding people from the hell, moaning of the survivals of the
casualies and searching every corner of New York to find their loved one. It was
the most cold-blooded catastrophe in our time.

But time and our forgetfulness heals some of the heart broken mind. Watching
the most invincivle America's pride collapsing in front of everyone, I have again
confirmed that nothing in this world can be dependable always and everlasting
but perishes in the end. Yes, it seems to be right life is nothing but an empty dream.

Bible says, "All flesh is as grass and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The
grass withers and the flower falls away. But the word of the Lord endures for ever."
I think we, after more than 50 years of experience, admit that we are limited, fragile
and mortal being: Nothing is secure and certain. We don't know what will come to me
very next moment. I want you to find out what you can really trust, something never
changes or shaken, something true for good, something eternal not man made,
something invisible worth having hope for in your earthly days.

It is merely another day passing now. We are so much closer to our personal ending.
What should we want to be called by wife, kids and friends after death? A lust-chaser,
a money-seeker, a selfish ego or a wise man who know, grasp and enjoy the never
changing truth for his life. We are spiritual being, wanting and seaching something
fo fill his emptiness. We should take care of our soul content with the eternal
assurance. All is vanity to who has not found this secret yet: why don't we start
the new wonderful relationship with your creator, NOW.

I wish we shall enjoy the peace of mind no matter what happens to us. Some would
ask whether you do not lose your peace in times of tradegy. If you still have that
peace in you with gratitude regardless of the situation, you may truly be called
a winner in a life long marathon.

War broke out yesterday. Until we have a clear sign of the success of America's
military action, the ensuing uncertainty clouds all our life, worsening by the weak
global economy. Reprisal calls another blood but people seeks to justice.
We need to have a wisdom in this time of choas. I hope we all keep our peaceful spirit
and appreciate another.
